Nomatter if it is plastic, biodegradable plastic or bioplastic it is not able to degrade if it ends up stuck on the landfill. We cannot save our world by allowing single use items to take up more time thats needed. The time that it takes for these to degrade depends on numerous things, and they dont all take place on a landfill.
What are these plastics?
- Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, food waste, etc. Bioplastic can be made from agricultural by-products and also from used plastic bottles and other containers using microorganisms.
Biodegradable plastic is plastic that decomposes naturally in the environment. This is achieved when microorganisms in the environment metabolize and break down the structure of biodegradable plastic. The end result is one which is less harmful to the environment than traditional plastics.
We are killing our animals
100,000 marine creatures a year die from plastic entanglement and these are the ones found. Approximately 1 million sea birds also die from plastic. A plastic bag can kill numerous animals because they take so long to disintegrate.
Degradable or not, we all know that plastic is an issue. Supermarkets and their suppliers have wrapped veggies and fruit in plastic. This plastic wrapping is never consumed and is never used again. We cannot possibly be spending so much time on single-use items that don’t achieve a purpose beside space on a landfill.
