Hemp structures have a lower carbon footprint than many materials. Slowly but surely it is becoming a building material of choice for many who want a sustainable and affordable type of building material.

Modern building materials have either mined from our planet or harvested from centuries-old forests. About 4000 square feet of hemp provides as much paper as 16000 square feet of trees. Considering the trees take decades to grow and hemp takes about 4 months, the advantages say use Hempcrete.

Hempcrete is light yet strong, pest and fire- resistant, has fantastic thermal and sound insulation properties and is sustainable and eco-friendly.

Along with hemp, lime, and water, there are various combinations of ingredients used to make hempcrete.

Below is one suggested “recipe”: 

By weight:

  • 4 parts hemp
  • 1 part builders lime (from a hardware store)
  • 1 part water
  • 10% – 15% cement
  • Mix the lime and water and leave for a few hours to make a slurry and then add the hemp slowly until it is fully mixed in.
  • Dimensions of the bales are 75cm x 35cm x 41cm
